FeJAL, CBL Launch Initiative to Boost Financial Literacy in Liberia

Liberia: The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL), in collaboration with the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), has unveiled an ambitious eight – month project designed to enhance financial literacy and promote economic inclusion across Liberia, particularly targeting women and underserved communities.

Implemented in partnership with PERT Consultancy Inc., the initiative aims to equip citizens with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed financial decisions. This effort will address significant gaps in financial literacy that currently limit access to banking and financial services in Liberia.

In a release, FeJAL underscored its commitment to empowering women and marginalized groups, emphasizing that the project aligns with its vision to enable Liberia women, especially in rural areas, to better understand financial systems and improve their livelihoods.

The initiative prioritizes women, youth, and rural residents who are often excluded from formal financial systems. Leveraging its network of journalists, FeJAL plans to amplify the project’s message to ensure it reaches a broad audience nationwide.

Expected outcomes of the project include increased access to banking services, improved savings rates, and enhanced financial well – being for participants. The initiative also aims to create a more inclusive financial ecosystem by addressing barriers such as limited knowledge, cultural norms, and geographic challenges.

Key components of the project include the development of culturally relevant, straightforward, and engaging educational materials. Covering nine critical themes of financial literacy including goal – setting, budgeting, saving, debt management, consumer protection, and investment the materials will be presented in simple Liberian English and translated into local vernacular languages for greater accessibility.

This initiative supports the CBL objectives by tackling challenges identified in the 2013 Financial Inclusion Survey and aligning with the National Financial Education Strategy (NFES) for Liberia.

With technical support from the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Technical Assistance, FeJAL has been selected as the lead implementer of this nationwide initiative, which began in December 2024 and will continue through July 2025.
