The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) has donated assorted medical materials to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK), the nation’s premier referral health facility. This contribution aims to enhance the hospital’s capacity to treat wounds and save lives, particularly in the wake of the Margibi incident.

The donation was made in response to an urgent request from the hospital for essential materials needed to treat accident victims who sustained injuries and burns after a vehicle recently somersaulted and exploded along the Kakata-Weala highway.

The donated supplies include items for dressing wounds such as cotton wool, gauze pads, gauze bandages, and elastic bandages, as well as examination gloves, scissors, nose masks, and isolation gowns. These materials are critical for the hospital’s daily operations, especially in handling accident cases and other medical emergencies.

In making the presentation, the Secretary General of the Liberian Red Cross, Gregory Blamoh, emphasized the Red Cross’s commitment to making future donations where necessary to ensure that the hospital can provide quality and timely medical care, especially in times of emergency.

“The Red Cross extends its deepest empathy to all those injured in the Margibi incident. Our hearts go out to you during this challenging time, and we wish you a swift and full recovery. We remain steadfast in our commitment to support JFK Hospital and ensure that such vital medical supplies are available to aid in your healing process,” Mr. Blamoh pointed out.

Dr. Ian Wachekwa, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at JFK, expressed profound gratitude for the donation. “This contribution from the Red Cross is incredibly timely and greatly appreciated,” said Dr. Wachekwa.

“The materials are extremely useful to the operation of the hospital, especially in attending to accident cases and treating other wounds. These supplies will significantly enhance our capacity to provide urgent care and improve patient outcomes.”

Dr. Wachekwa also highlighted the impact of such donations on the hospital’s operations. “Having these supplies readily available allows our medical staff to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies. The support from the Red Cross is a lifeline for our patients and healthcare workers alike,” he added.

The Liberian Red Cross Society continues to play a pivotal role in addressing healthcare and other humanitarian challenges in the country. However, its efforts to reach further and deliver services to more people, communities, and institutions are hampered by very limited budgetary support.
